17 suspected Human Traffickers Arrested, 14 Victims Rescued in Ondo

In a swift operation, police detectives in Ondo State have arrested 17 suspected transnational human traffickers and rescued 14 victims. The suspects, operating as a syndicate, allegedly lured
from Togo and Chad with promises of employment in Canada, only to seize their belongings and hold them captive.
According to reports, a Togolese national, Meale Yaoili, escaped from the traffickers and reported the incident to the police. Yaoili was promised a job in Canada by a suspect, Tchodia Potolaw Fidel, who claimed to reside in Canada. Upon arrival in Nigeria, Yaoili's belongings were seized, and he was held captive after paying 800,000 CFA francs
The police arrested six suspects and rescued three victims in connection with the case. Further investigations revealed that the suspects were involved in trans-border criminal activities, including recruitment, trafficking, and modern-day slavery.
In a separate incident, 11 Chadian nationals were rescued, and Umaru Baba, the alleged mastermind, was arrested. Baba operated as a representative of an online marketing company, luring victims with promises of commission-based work.
The Ondo State Police Command has warned landlords and property owners to conduct thorough background checks on prospective tenants to prevent such activities.
