Beneath the busy corridors of universities across the country, a growing mental health crisis is challenging students’ ability to succeed academically and socially. Recent reports highlight that many Nigerian undergraduates face symptoms of anxiety, depression and emotional stress, often without adequate support systems to help them cope.

Clinical psychologists point to lifestyle pressures, heavy academic workloads, financial worries and the influence of social media as major contributors to deteriorating mental well-being among students. At a recent mental health seminar at Caleb University, experts noted that academic stress and social dynamics can lead to emotional instability if left unaddressed.

Despite increasing awareness, many campuses still lack fully functional mental health units. While guidance and counselling departments exist, students often report low utilisation and limited access to professional care leading many to suffer in silence.

Organizations in Lagos and other cities have begun offering training and first-aid workshops

on mental health to help students recognise early warning signs and provide peer support.

These initiatives aim to fill gaps left by under-resourced university services.

However, with Nigeria facing a severe mental health care gap millions affected and only a

few hundred trained specialists advocates say more needs to be done to turn awareness

into effective support for students nationwide.

Many Nigerian students experience stress, anxiety, and depression amid academic

pressures. Awareness is rising, but access to counselling and support remains limited.

Community and institutional programmes are emerging, but broader systemic change is

needed.
